Winter can be fun and bright, but for many people, autumn is the most wonderful time of the year in terms of sights, smells, foods and decor.

As evidenced by the baked goods, coffee drinks and crafts, pumpkin is the perfect mascot for a fall, and for good reason. It is an eye-catching seasonal product that you can eat and decorate with, and it is widely available during the fall months. However, if you find yourself wandering around roaming home decor stores and feeling a sense of overloading gourd, there are many other ways to make your home decor reflect the spirit of the season.

Not all homeowners want to download season motifs that need to be filled out and stored for most of the year. Instead, find ways to play with color and texture using items already around the house.

"Some of the things I suggest are taking the items that decorate them regularly, like candles, pillows, or rugs, and it's kind of changing these things into autumn colors," says Sherry Trout, owner of Keeping Good Company.

Fall colors do not have to be brown and orange. All kinds of warm earth tones work well to convey a comfortable autumn weather feeling. Look for items that have hints of rust, red, gold, dark green, even dark purple or burgundy. To put this technique into action, switch brightly colored summer pillows and throw blankets on the living room sofa for these deeper shapes.

Fireplace mounts are nice touch points that call attention to the items above it. Instead of redesigning the entire scarf for every holiday, switch small details with simple touches, such as using two-colored fabric runners or candles or faux flowers all year round.

If you usually decorate your home with glassware or vases, Ms. Trott says it is simply about changing what they contain to seasonalize your home.
